Disaster Relief Update and Beauvoir information update
information compiled by Mike Crane

Despite massive problems with communications, travel and even fuel - progress is being made on getting assistance to our Compatriots ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. This is a time for all Southerners to set aside organizational differences and help our folks.

One Compatriot in need of help is John Cripps who needs a generator to run his well pump for water for his family. Two funds that you can contribute to are listed below for John and many more in need.

Please do what you can. If you can provide logistical assistance please contact the fund of your choice.

During Hurricane Andrew I lived in South Florida, just north of the devastated area and I remember making many trips south to help our Compatriots, friends and co-workers. The sense of relief and morale boost for those affected is just impossible to describe.

Unlike many "relief" funds the two below deliver 100% of your money to your besieged Compatriots.

No amount is too small, no amount is too big. Just send what you can, but send it today.

Effort to assist John Cripps:

Ray and Compatriots: Make a pledge so we'll know how much money we can count on to buy the needed goods. Then just send a check to the LS designated "Relief Fund."

We now have a team of LS members who are willing to go into south Mississippi to make a delivery to John Cripps. We are scouting out the best route and making other logistical plans to get in and out safely. The availability of fuel is of major concern to us. The team leader is to report back to me in a couple of hours with information regarding the cost of a generator and other items. I don't yet know how much the entire operation will cost. However, we think we can do it. If we can get John's farm back up and running, then it can serve as a focal point for other compatriots in south Mississippi who don't have places to stay. The problem here for the moment will be communicating with them to let them know that John's place is available.

Thanks for your offer of support.

FSI,

Michael

ANNOUNCING THE LEAGUE OF THE SOUTH "KATRINA" RELIEF FUND

The League of the South will undertake a relief fund for our members who were victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Our first order of business has been to contact our members in south Alabama, south Mississippi, and southeast Louisiana who were in the storm's path. Thus far, we are happy to note that most of our members in Mobile and the surrounding areas of southwest Alabama have reported in safely with little major property damage. However, because of our inability to contact LS members in Mississippi and Louisiana, we have no idea about their status or specific needs. I can report, however, that Ron Kennedy and his family, who live in Mandeville (north of NO on the lake front), are safe in north Louisiana. Dr. and Mrs. Milburn Calhoun, owners of Pelican Publishers of Gretna, are also there and safe as well.

Once we're able to confirm the status of our members from these areas, we will assess their needs, and then use the funds we've collected to provide for those needs. Because of the widespread destruction it is likely that the recovery period will stretch over many months.

The LS Katrina Relief Fund will be administered by the LS Board of Directors. Funds will not be distributed until we can confirm the exact needs of our members and until we can actually deliver the goods. Obviously, some of our less well-off members will be placed at the top of the list for assistance. Any funds collected that are not used for this particular emergency will be sequestered in a separate account to be used for future emergency events.

If you would like to help us help our own people, please send your non-tax-deductible donation, marked "Katrina Relief Fund" and made payable to the League, to

LS
PO Box 760
Killen, Alabama 35645.

May God bless you and may He relieve the suffering of our people.

On behalf of the LS Board of Directors,

Michael Hill
President, The League of the South

Update on Beauvoir

Beauvoir is still standing. The initial reports that Beauvoir had been destroyed were false. Beauvoir has suffered damage but appears that it can be salvaged.

A web site has been setup to provide information on other Historical sites in the affected areas:

Confederate Memorial Hall — New Orleans, La. -- Update

Sam Hood, who is a member of the board of directors of Confederate Memorial Hall, sends us the following news: He has spoken to Mrs. Pat Ricci, curator of the hall. She reports that as of yesterday (Aug. 31) the museum is apparently not flooded.

A major concern remains security. His reports indicate that the National D-Day museum directly across the street from the Confederate Museum has been "gutted and trashed by looters."

Sadly, we are informed that the homes of every member of the Museum's staff are under water. The entire staff is now homeless and will have nothing to return to. Sam informed Mrs. Ricci of the efforts of all the readers of this site to inform the Civil War community of their plight and she has asked that all of you be thanked.

More updates will be posted as they become available.
