YEAR OF THE SOUTH

FIRST “YEAR OF THE SOUTH” SURVEY ISSUED BY THE SOUTHERN NATIONAL CONGRESS COMMITTEE

MARION, VA; February 28, 2007. The Southern National Congress Committee announced today the issuance of the first of twelve monthly surveys to be conducted by the SNC Committee via its new website, www.southernnationalcongress.org.

Terry Compton, SNC Committee Director of Communications, explained, “The Year of the South Survey is our effort to inform ourselves fully about Southern attitudes, concerns, and grievances, so that the future Congress can be effective as an alternative, legitimate voice for the South and our people. With that goal in mind, we plan to conduct a short monthly survey (only six questions per survey) on the SNC Website. The first one is designed to sound out how we Southerners feel about ourselves and our region.”

Subsequent surveys will deal with specific issues of potential concern to Southerners; for example, the economy and livelihood, immigration and the Third World “invasion,” national security, our eroding liberty, education, culture and the arts. The SNC website includes an interactive response mechanism for respondents to register their views.

Terry Compton added, “Our surveys are drafted for thoughtful and discerning people. Be warned that our questions require careful reading and some thought before answering. We thank our fellow Southerners in advance for taking the time to let us know how they feel about vital issues.”

The first survey poses the following questions and asks respondents if they agree, disagree, or are not sure.

SURVEY # 1: WHO ARE WE?

1) I believe the South and its people are a genuine nation; that is, a unique people bound together by a common history, traditions, language, folkways, general outlook and values; and by sharing the same soil.

2) While our traditions, general outlook, and values may embrace certain political ideas, chief among them being individual freedom and limited government; I believe the South is not a so-called “proposition nation,” whose members are bound together simply by adherence to a set of abstract political ideas or creed.

3) I believe the South has contributed immeasurably to the independence, continued freedom, stability, prosperity, and cultural riches of the United States through our statesmen, soldiers, theologians, poets, historians, novelists, musicians, sportsmen, inventers, and entrepreneurs; at least as much any other region of the country.

4) I believe that despite our invaluable contributions to the wealth and welfare of the United States, and despite America’s oft-stated commitment to “multi-culturalism” and “diversity,” the South’s role in the life of the country is not sufficiently appreciated by America’s governing, academic, media, and cultural elites; as revealed by their never-ending assaults on Southern heritage, symbols, and heroes, and by their frequent stereotyping and ridicule of Southern folkways, stock characters, and language.

5) I believe that Southern heritage, symbols, heroes, and the South’s role in the American experience, past and present, are worthy not only of being defended, but also are worthy of the respect and emulation of the entire country.

6) I believe that if the very existence of the Southern people as a worthy and distinct people is to be preserved, along with our embattled heritage, symbols, and heroes, and our freedom and prosperity; Southerners will have to take responsibility for this vital task and accomplish it ourselves.

At the end of each month results will be tabulated and posted on the site, www.southernnationalcongress.org, as well as announced over the Internet.
